My wife and I tow a caravan with a Ford Ranger PX Hi-Rider and do a bit of free camping between major stops. As the van only has a relatively small water tank we needed to carry extra water in the rear of our tug. Not to mention all the other paraphernalia that goes in to a grey nomads vehicle – Ezireach slide out system, 65 litre fridge and freezer, second battery system, tools, camp cooker and fuel etc, etc, blah, blah, blah.
The Ranger was well able to handle the load but it dropped a little at the back. I am mindful that the large single axle van must remain level under tow to allow the BPW Independent Drive Control (automatic anti – snaking device on the van) to function efficiently. I needed something that was going to maintain the ride height under load without making the ride harder. Did plenty of homework and rang various firms about different options and discovered that air bags were the preferred option for my application. Finally called into Airbag Man at Brendale to get some more info re fitting and operation of their airbags and received the best presales service ever, from Darren & the Team. That sealed my decision and I arranged to have a Airbag Man air system fitted.
Airbag Man is a wholesaler so they recommend fitting at Redcliffe Suspensions. They did an excellent job and were also the least expensive.
Since the airbags have been fitted I am able to maintain the original ride height with the same ride quality as before. The rear of the Ranger does not sag and the van remains dead level.
I recommend the Airbag Man Air Suspension as -
- It does the job of maintaining height under load without sacrificing ride quality like when adding extra leaves in the springs
- I am able to deflate bags in seconds when there is no load.
- I am able to easily increase pressure in the bags when required with a hand bike pump (the bags take very little air) – therefore don’t have to buy and carry a compressor (overkill for my pressures)
